Black Bottom Pie
one baked pie shell
1 1/3 T cornstarch
1/2 c sugar
4 egg yolks
2 cups milk
about 1/2 c. chocholate chips
2 t. vanilla
1 T unflavored gelatin
1/2 c water
4 egg whites
1/2 c sugar
1/4 t cram of tartar
Cook cornstarch 1.2 c sugar, yolks and a little milk; slowly adding remaining milk to this mixture. Cook it until it coats the spoon. (a long time....8-10 minutes). Remove 1 cup of custard and add 1/2 c chocolate ships and 1 t. vanilla. Beat well and cool. Add this to bottom layer of baked pie shell.

To the large batch of custard add gelatin that has been softened in the 1/4 c. water. Stir well. While this cools beat egg whites with the tartar. Slowly add the 1/2 c of sugar and beat until stiff. Add 1 t. vanilla. Fold this mixture into the cooled custard.. Pour over chocolate filling. Chop a few chocolate chips and sprinkle over to of pie.

Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.
